ABOUT THIS JOURNAL 

Aims and scope  

The Ghana Journal of Geography (GJG) is a refereed journal published by the Department of Geography and Resource Development, University of Ghana, Legon. The Journal publishes the best of original research and scholarship in physical and human geography and research from other related disciplines working on issues of spatial relevance. It provides a forum for discussing new issues and ideas of relevance to the developing world.  

 Our focus is on theoretical, conceptual, and empirical studies of human-environment interactions as broadly conceptualized by practitioners, academics, and policy makers. The content of submissions can include review articles, research articles, case studies, viewpoints and book reviews, commentaries, and ethnographic analyses, and position papers. We also publish special issues. We invite contributions from all countries from all continents of relevance to sustainable global development. The Journal strives to work with high class scholars in the field of geography and related sciences to ensure the publication of high-quality standard articles. 

Peer Review  

  • All submitted manuscripts are subject to initial appraisal by the editors and, if found suitable for further consideration, it is sent for peer review by independent, anonymous expert referees. 
  • All peer review is double blind and submission is online HERE
  • Two reviewers (blind) per paper.
  • Authors are encouraged to suggest three (3) potential reviewers during the manuscript submission. Suggested reviewers should be experts in the relevant field, have a strong publication record, and have no conflict of interest with the authors. The editors reserve the right to select reviewers at their discretion and are not obligated to use the authors' suggestions. In suggesting reviwers, provide their names, areas of expertise and active email addresses. 
  • Maximum of 12 weeks for review process.
  • Decision taken by a panel of 3 editors.

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge. Advertising Policy

The Ghana Journal of Geography maintains editorial independence and transparency in all aspects of its publishing practices. At present, the journal does not host commercial advertising on its website or within its published articles. Should advertising be introduced in the future, the following principles will apply:

  • Advertisements will be clearly distinguishable from editorial content.
  • Advertising will not influence editorial decisions, peer review, or publication outcomes.
  • Decisions regarding the acceptance of advertisements will be made by the journal’s editorial management in accordance with the journal’s ethical standards.
  • The journal reserves the right to decline advertisements that are misleading, inappropriate, or inconsistent with the academic and scholarly mission of the journal.
  • Advertisements will not be linked to editorial decision-making and will remain clearly separate from published content.

The Ghana Journal of Geography is committed to ensuring that any advertising activities do not compromise the integrity, independence, or scholarly quality of the journal.

Direct Marketing Policy

The Ghana Journal of Geography may occasionally communicate with researchers, scholars, and practitioners regarding opportunities to submit manuscripts or engage with the journal. All direct marketing or communication activities conducted on behalf of the journal adhere to the following principles:

  • Communications are appropriate, professional, and targeted to researchers whose work aligns with the journal’s scope.
  • Information about the journal, its policies, editorial processes, and publication practices is accurate, transparent, and not misleading.
  • The journal does not engage in aggressive or indiscriminate solicitation of manuscripts.
  • Invitations to submit manuscripts are sent primarily to scholars whose expertise is relevant to the field of geography and related disciplines.

These practices ensure that the journal’s communication and outreach activities maintain the highest standards of professionalism, transparency, and integrity in scholarly publishing.

Open Access and Licensing Policy

Open Access Policy: The Ghana Journal of Geography is a fully open access journal. All articles published in the journal are made freely and permanently accessible online immediately upon publication. Users are allowed to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of articles without prior permission from the publisher or the author, provided that proper attribution is given. This policy is in line with global open access principles that promote the wide dissemination of scholarly research.

Licensing: All articles published in the Ghana Journal of Geography are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0). This license permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, including for commercial purposes, provided that the original author(s) and source are properly credited.

Users must:

  • Give appropriate credit to the author(s) and the journal
  • Provide a link to the license
  • Indicate if changes were made

Copyright: Authors retain copyright of their work. By submitting and publishing in the Ghana Journal of Geography, authors grant the journal the right of first publication. The work is simultaneously licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY 4.0) license.

Self-Archiving and Repository Policy: Authors are permitted to deposit all versions of their manuscript (submitted version, accepted manuscript, and published version) in institutional repositories, personal websites, or other platforms without restriction. Proper citation of the published version in the Ghana Journal of Geography is encouraged.

Article Processing Charges: The Ghana Journal of Geography does not charge any article processing fees (APCs).

Licensing Information on Articles: All published articles clearly indicate their licensing terms on both the article webpage and the PDF version.
